I enjoy buying a lot of things at Op Shops, and one of my guilty pleasures is old-school kids books. I have a soft spot for the old Annuals, but I tend to fall for anything with intriguing illustrations... now there's a surprise.
So here's a beauty that I picked up for a sizzling 20c the other day. And, though I do buy a lot of our reading books second-hand, it's not for the kids... this one's just for a little bit of inspiration.
The only clue as to who has given us these lovely illustrations is in the only printed text in the book. On the back cover, printed rather inconspicuously is "Printed in the GDR for W.F.Graham (Northampton) Ltd. Series No. 890" So, I don't know the artist, but if you do, then thank them for me. I've enjoyed having the company of this little book for the past few days...
Do you collect anything from Op Shops?
What a lovely little book ... All the way from East Germany.
ReplyDeleteFrom East Germany, via Britian... ain't little finds funny. Thanks for your insight. I couldn't quite dig up "GDR" ... still can't... is it "G... Deutsher Repulic"? Where has all my German gone?... Mit dem hund spazieran? g
ReplyDeleteI have just found your blog - was looking for what other blogger say about op shops. I have a 10 things Monday list about op shops for crafters/artists and am looking for suggestions on what number 10 should be. Hope you can stop by homespunblissblog.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteLike your blog a lot. Cheers!
It's German Democratic Republic. Deutsche Demokratische Republik in German. It would be interesting to know how a British publisher came to be printing kids' books behind the Iron Curtain. Cheap labour at the time, I guess. And interesting also to know how your little book ended up at a Toowoomba op shop. Keep on walking that Hund...
